Mero carried his laundry bag into the house. He said hello to Monadri and Jai, who were sitting at opposite ends of the couch, and dropped his laundry bag in the utility room to wash later.
He went back outside and sat down on the porch to call Sak’s house. Sak’s sister Tastili answered the phone.
“Hello?”
“Tas, it’s Mero. Is Sak anywhere around?”
“I’ll get him.” After a minute or so, Sak came on the line. “Hello?”
“Hey, Sak. What’s up?”
“Are you home for Thanksgiving break?” the boy asked.
“Yep. Do you want to go to the park with me?”
“Sure, let me ask Grandpa if it’s OK.”
Mero drove to Sak’s house. The boy was waiting on the front porch, and climbed into the car quickly.
“I missed you,” Sak said.
“I missed you too, little buddy,” Mero replied, ruffling the boy’s curly hair with one hand, keeping the other on the wheel.
They went to the swings. The park was deserted this time of year and so no one else was there. Sak turned a little in the swing to face Mero, saying, “I’m glad you’re back.”
